Beeyoutiful Cafe on Upper Barr was rated 0 in September. Chutneys on St Michael's Street got a 1, Red Star climbed from 0 to 3, and 135 of 140 recent ratings were 5s.

Beeyoutiful Cafe, at 35A-35B Upper Barr in OX4, has been given a food hygiene rating of 0. That is the bottom of the scale, and it means “urgent improvement necessary”.

The inspection was on 3 September 2026. The result is now on the Food Standards Agency register. No reply from the business appears on it.

It was one of only five Oxford inspections since the start of September to score below 5. Of the 140 Oxford ratings dated September or October that have been published so far, 135 are 5s, “very good”.

What the inspector found at Beeyoutiful Cafe

The FSA publishes three scores behind each rating. On these, a higher number is worse.

  • Confidence in management: 30. That is the worst possible score. It covers how the business records and manages food safety.
  • Structural compliance: 25. Also the worst possible. It covers cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and pest control.
  • Food hygiene and safety: 20, out of a worst of 25. It covers how food is handled, stored and cooked on the day.

A 0 is not a closure order. Closing a premises is a separate legal step, and the register does not record one here.

A 2 means “improvement necessary”, a 3 “generally satisfactory” and a 4 “good”. Chillies scored 15 for food hygiene and safety, 5 for structure and 10 for management.

An August 1, published late: Chutneys

Chutneys Indian Brasserie, at 36 St Michael’s Street in the city centre, was rated 1, “major improvement necessary”, after an inspection on 13 August 2026.

That rating did not appear on the register in time for our October roundup, which has been corrected. Its scores were 10 for food hygiene and safety, 15 for structure and 20 for management. No reply from the business appears on the register.

Most improved: Red Star, from 0 to 3

Red Star Chinese Restaurant on Cowley Road was one of five Oxford premises rated 0 when we last checked. That 0 dated from an inspection on 22 January 2026.

At its new inspection on 29 September it scored 3, “generally satisfactory”. It scored 10 on each of the three measures.

Oxford’s 0s now

Four Oxford premises are rated 0 on the register today:

Red Sky in Headington, rated 0 in July 2025 and on our October list, no longer appears on the register. That does not tell us why.

Across Oxford, 1,176 of the 1,349 rated premises have a 5, or 87%. Another 113 are awaiting their first inspection and 48 are exempt.

October ratings still coming through

Sixty Oxford inspections dated October had been published by 2 November, the latest from 23 October. All 60 are 5s. Lower ratings often take several weeks to appear, because a business has 21 days to appeal, so we will check October again in December before saying anything about the month as a whole.

What it means for you

  • Check before you book. Search any Oxford premises on the FSA ratings site. The inspection date is shown next to the score.
  • A rating is one day’s snapshot. A business can appeal within 21 days of being told its rating, publish a right to reply beside it, or ask for a re-inspection once it has fixed the problems. The rating stands until the council inspects again.
  • Report a problem. Oxford City Council’s food safety team takes complaints at foodsafety@oxford.gov.uk.
