Oxford Christmas Trains 2026: Paddington Cut 27 Dec to 3 Jan

The biggest thing to know about Oxford’s trains this Christmas is a Network Rail closure near Slough from Sunday 27 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, which hits every GWR train to and from London Paddington. It follows the usual shutdown of the whole network on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. What will run to Paddington that week has not been announced; Network Rail says diversions are “being agreed”. Chiltern’s route from Oxford to Marylebone is not part of that work, so it is the line to plan around.

The quick answer

• Paddington line disrupted Sunday 27 December to Sunday 3 January for track work at Dolphin Junction, between Slough and Langley; the replacement plan is not yet published.
• No trains at all on Christmas Day, and on Boxing Day last year Chiltern ran a limited Oxford Parkway to Marylebone service only, from about 8am to 9pm.
• Last Christmas Eve train from Marylebone to Oxford last year was 20.06, and from Oxford to Marylebone 20.49. The 2026 times are not out yet.

Dolphin Junction: the Paddington line, 27 December to 3 January

Network Rail is spending £27.8m rebuilding the eastern half of Dolphin Junction, between Slough and Langley, where more than 400 passenger trains a day cross between the main and relief lines. The track work comes in two closures that “will affect train services for London Paddington”:

The work is due to be finished at the start of January 2027. On travel arrangements the page says only: “Alternative travel arrangements, including diversions, are being agreed. Once details are confirmed information will be posted here” (Network Rail, Dolphin Junction upgrade).

For the November weekend National Rail has published the detail, and it is a guide to what Christmas may look like: no trains between Maidenhead or Heathrow and Paddington all weekend, “a very reduced train service” between Oxford and Reading only, no Oxford trains to Swindon or Bristol, and Chiltern named as the alternative to London (National Rail, Paddington 28 to 29 November). The Christmas arrangements could differ, so do not book around that until they are published.

Chiltern to Marylebone: what last Christmas looked like

Chiltern publishes a page for each day of the holiday. Its 2026 pages are not up yet; last year’s were last updated between August and late October 2025. Last year’s pattern (Chiltern Railways, 24 December 2025; 26 December 2025; 31 December 2025):

In 2026 Christmas Day falls on a Friday, Boxing Day on a Saturday and the substitute bank holiday on Monday 28 December, so the pattern will not repeat exactly.

Engineering works in the run-up to Christmas

National Rail has already listed these for Oxford in December (National Rail, planned engineering works):

• Saturday 5 December, late: buses replace GWR trains between Didcot Parkway and Oxford after 22.45 (Didcot Parkway and Oxford), and buses replace Chiltern trains between Oxford Parkway and Oxford from 22.55 on the Saturday to 08.35 on Sunday 6 December (Oxford Parkway and Oxford).
• Tuesday 15 to Friday 18 December, late evenings: from about 23.45, Chiltern’s Marylebone to Oxford trains run only as far as Bicester North, with buses on to Bicester Village, Oxford Parkway and Oxford (Oxford, Bicester and Banbury). That is the last week before the schools break up, so it catches Christmas party returns from London.

National Rail’s own Christmas page will carry the network-wide last trains, usually in late November or early December (National Rail, Christmas and New Year).

Buses and the Oxford Tube

Neither Oxford operator has published its 2026 festive timetables. Last year’s arrangements are the best guide.

Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel (2025): Saturday timetables with an early finish on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve; no local buses on Christmas Day, when only the airline coach ran to Heathrow and Gatwick; a special service on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day on routes 3, 3A, 5, 6, 8, 15, 35, 500, X2 and X40 (Boxing Day also had the 300 and 400 park and ride); and no night buses (N400, NX1, NX2, NX40) across the period (Oxford Bus Company, festive services 2025/26).

Stagecoach and the Oxford Tube (2025): “No buses or Oxford Tube coaches will run” on Christmas Day. The Tube had special Christmas Eve and Boxing Day timetables; Oxford local routes ran Saturday timetables with an early finish on Christmas Eve, no departures after 6pm except named routes; and New Year’s Eve ran a Saturday timetable with the late services running (Stagecoach, Christmas timetables Oxfordshire and Oxford Tube 2025).

If the Paddington line is cut in the week after Christmas, the Tube and Chiltern are the two ways to London that do not depend on it.

Driving and parking over Christmas

Oxford’s traffic filters replace the temporary congestion charge from 28 September, and the park and ride is still the cheapest way into the centre: see parking in Oxford for the tariffs and the roadworks and travel page for closures.
