Where to meet Father Christmas near Oxford in 2026: Didcot's Steam Into Christmas from 5 December, Chinnor Santa trains from £24.50, the castle's bear workshop.

Two Santa steam events within reach of Oxford have already put their 2026 dates on sale: Didcot Railway Centre’s Steam Into Christmas on December weekends from 5 December, and the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway’s Santa Steam Specials from 28 November. In the city itself, Oxford Castle & Prison ran a Santa’s Teddy Bear Workshop in its crypt last Christmas, but has not yet announced 2026. Westgate did not list a grotto on its Christmas page last year.

Didcot Railway Centre: Steam Into Christmas

Didcot Railway Centre runs Steam Into Christmas on Saturday and Sunday 5 and 6, 12 and 13, and 19 and 20 December, plus Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 December. Families get a passport and a Christmas stocking on arrival, hunt for Santa’s lost reindeer across the 24-acre site, with a small gift at each reindeer station, and finish at the grotto, where each child meets Santa and chooses a present. Unlimited rides on the demonstration line and the 1932 engine shed are included.

The gates open at 9.30am and close at 4pm, and you book a set arrival time. Allow two to three hours. Member discounts, complimentary tickets and gift vouchers do not apply to this event, and carers now need a paid ticket (Didcot Railway Centre, Steam Into Christmas).

Chinnor: Santa Steam Specials

The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway’s Santa trains run on 28 and 29 November at £24.50 per person, then on every December Saturday and Sunday and on 22 and 23 December at £29.50. There are three departures a day, at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm, and the trip lasts about 1 hour 35 minutes. Trains leave from platform 4 at Princes Risborough station (HP27 9DN).

Every child aged 1 to 12 gets a gift and visits Santa’s grotto; under 1s do not need a ticket and still get a small gift. Hot and cold drinks and mince pies or biscuits are included, and there is face painting for 3 to 11 year olds at Chinnor. Buggies have to be left on the platform or in the car, and there is one wheelchair space per train (Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway, Santa Steam Specials).

Oxford Castle & Prison: Santa’s Teddy Bear Workshop

The only Santa experience in central Oxford last year was at the castle. The Santa’s Teddy Bear Workshop began in the candle-lit crypt: children met Father Christmas, made and named their own bear and designed a festive top for it, and could post a letter to the North Pole. It was aimed at ages 3 to 7 and lasted 50 minutes to an hour. Tickets were £20 for one child and one adult, £16 for each extra child and £4 for each extra adult, with the castle’s Christmas trail included (Oxford Castle & Prison, Christmas Bear Workshop, September 2025 archive).

The castle’s final 2025 Christmas page gave the workshop’s dates as 29 November to 23 December, alongside a new 40-minute “Tales of the Tower” tour on weekend mornings (Christmas at Oxford Castle & Prison, November 2025 archive). Its current events page lists Ghost Fest in October and nothing for Christmas yet (Oxford Castle & Prison, what’s on). Last year’s Christmas pages were live by mid-September, so this year’s announcement is a little behind.
